A Primer of Statistical Techniques

In the past decade the statistical analysis of genomic and biological data has seen a very fast development. Though many of the statistical methods applied are already well known and established in a multitude of disciplines, they are also often applied without the proper understanding of their potential and limitations. In this tutorial we will allow a hands-on learning experience of some of these statistical methods. Through examples and detailed analysis of biological data, our goal is to promote the correct application of statistical methods and the proper interpretation of results. We will carefully review how the output of a statistical model should be interpreted, what type of model comparisons can be made, how to apply statistical tests, and how to perform accurate inference. This tutorial will consolidate the basis of statistical analysis that will be essential for the full understanding of the topics developed in the more advanced seminars.
